Vertuous Beauty is a way of looking at Black beauty with one question : what would beauty look like if Black skin were the reference from the very beginning?
For Joan, the answer began with cosmetic chemistry. After years spent developing beauty products, she came to understand that creating a formula was only part of the work. Born from the belief that Black skin deserves to be seen as an aesthetic reference in its own right, Vertuous Beauty exists to challenge the way Black beauty has been imagined, represented and desired.
Growing up between Cameroonian culture and a French upbringing, Joan developed her own relationship with beauty — shaped by different references, aesthetics and cultures. Vertuous Beauty became a way to bring these worlds together and create the beauty she believed should exist.
Through makeup, imagery, colour and cultural references, Vertuous Beauty offers a different way of seeing Black beauty, not as an adaptation, but a point of view. Each piece is created with intention to elevate the image of Black woman, balancing technical expertise with desirability, and becoming part of a larger world of beauty, objects and references.
Vertuous Beauty is not only about makeup. It is about elevating, changing what the eye has learned to see.
LETTER from the founder
I created Vertuous Beauty because I wanted to create the beauty I believed should exist.
After a rejection, I made myself a promise: no Black woman should ever have to question whether she belongs. I wanted to create products that would not simply give her a place, but make her the starting point, a reference in the most sophisticated way.
I had spent years learning how beauty is made, first making my way through the laboratories of LVMH, then developing over a hundred beauty products. The science and those experiences gave me something I deeply value: the freedom to understand how to shape the matter and create products.
I wanted to create a house where Black skin and Black women are the starting point. A place where their references, impact and influence are seen and recognised.
I want every piece to contribute to the way she sees herself, the way she carries herself, and ultimately, the way the world learns to see her.
This is the work of Vertuous Beauty: to elevate the image, the posture, the presence and to re-educate the eye to see Black women differently.
