A LETTER FROM Joan, The Founder
I grew up understanding beauty through the women around me, especially through the way my Cameroonian mother dressed: from a casual European suit to a beautiful Kaba, a traditional Cameroonian dress. Through the colours they chose, the objects they kept close, and the rituals that made everyday life feel considered.
My mother showed me that beauty could be expressive and refined at once. That the smallest details could say something about who you are. These moments shaped my understanding of beauty long before I had words for it.
But I did not always see that world reflected in beauty. I saw products, trends and images that often felt disconnected from the richness of Black culture, from the way colour comes alive on Black skin, and from the kind of sophistication I recognised.
After many years in beauty as a chemist and product developer, I decided to create what I could not find. I was looking for a brand where I could see myself — a Black woman — as the standard and the reference, never an afterthought. Something sophisticated and chic, but never out of reach. Something where my African culture is fully seen, and where I do not have to choose between elegant packaging and my Blackness.
Vertuous Beauty was created to make room for that recognition. It is for Black women in all their diversity, including mixed-race women and women with albinism: a world where culture, taste and presence are not separate ideas. Where beauty is made with intention.
