A LETTER FROM Joan, The Founder
I grew up surrounded by a particular kind of elegance. It lived in the way my Cameroonian mother dressed. Those memories were for most of them colourful, adorned with jewellery and always a touche of makeup. From casual European suit to a beautiful African dress.
The details and the way she carried herself when I was younger stood out to me. I saw culture and elegance exist naturally alongside one another. These details shaped my understanding of beauty long before I had words for it.
They taught me that beauty is in the details.
For a long time, I carried this understanding of beauty without seeing it fully reflected in the beauty industry. After experiencing a rejection, I knew I wanted to create a house where Black women could be the starting point — where their beauty, culture and sophistication would be seen and recognised.
I had spent years learning how beauty is made, first in the laboratories of LVMH, then developing more than a hundred beauty products. That experience gave me the knowledge and freedom to shape formulas, textures and colour into something meaningful.
Vertuous Beauty is for Black women in all their diversity, including mixed-race women and women with albinism. Each piece draws inspiration from a reference, a memory or a feeling. Every detail is considered and intentional, creating desirable objects to enjoy, live with and make part of your everyday ritual.
What I hope for most is that these pieces become part of women’s own moments: kept on their vanity, reached for in their daily rituals and carried with them through different seasons of their lives. There is something deeply meaningful to me in seeing Vertuous Beauty enter someone’s world — not only as makeup, but as an object that reflects her taste, her identity and the way she chooses to show up.
