What is inclusiveness in the beauty industry?

This term is used by brands that have decided to develop products suitable for all ages, genders and skin tones. The idea is to be more diversified and not exclude anyone.

Here we'll be talking exclusively about skin tones.

Inclusivity: illusion or reality?

From our point of view, this is an illusion for many brands, or at least it remains on the surface, and here are the three reasons why.

1. The trends

Beauty is becoming more and more inclusive.

Can we really define inclusivity as a trend when we know that it responds to a real problem: people from diverse backgrounds have unfortunately long been ignored in this industry.

So are brands being inclusive out of a concern to meet a need, or is it a way of widening their target and maintaining their good image?

2. The in-store experience

When the shade is "dark", it's sometimes hard to find it in store, even if it exists on the brand's website.

Our founder experienced this first-hand in a beauty store in the center of Paris. She was looking for a concealer and the brand she usually buys was out of stock. The consultant redirected her to another brand, and the darkest shade on display was still too light. Back home, she checked the brand's website and realized that darker shades existed, only they weren't displayed in store.

A feeling of disappointment and incomprehension... Why do some people have the privilege of finding products in-store and living the full customer experience, and others don't?

How can a truly inclusive brand not care about all its customers?

3. Being black is cool

Our melanin, our culture, we have that thing that will illuminate rooms and make anything interesting, timeless, give it life.
Brands know this and play on it. Except that we're not trendsetters!
